AESTHETICS & HISTORY OF ART
SUMMER Reading Group
"The Kitsch, the Fake and the Multiple: What's real in art production?"
Welcome to a short summer programme put together in order to discuss certain art matters. The format is structured to encourage free discussion about art production based on readings that are set in advance. To kick off the mini-course, I have found pieces of writing that discuss different aspects of the course theme: "The Kitsch, the Fake and the Multiple: What's real in art production?". For those who have taken one or both of the classes that I teach at SGS College, you will know that this general query introduces itself regularly, especially with regard to the 20th-century capacity to reproduce in numbers with an astonishing precision. The term 'kitsch' is often used in art criticism and is seen to be applied to certain works whose artists have deliberately exploited the category. So does that make it 'kitsch'?; or does that make it 'art'? And, exactly what is the difference?
I will be holding two classes in July. The first is an evening class on Monday, 21st July; and the second will be held in the morning on Tuesday, 22nd July. For those who work during the day, I want to offer evening options. In each class, we will be discussing two pieces of writing. Clement Greenberg's essay is an oft-quoted document and an important instance of 20th-century art history. The second piece, by Roger Scruton, takes a related topic, 'the fake', and applies it to certain contemporary works and artists working towards his main concern about the relationship between art, and truth and beauty.
At the bottom of the page there is an RSVP form. You are not required to RSVP. However, if you would like to attend either of the classes, please contact me either by using one of these forms or contacting me directly through my email account.
The classes will be held at 67 Slad Road, Stroud, GL5 1QX.
The cost is £10 for one class (July or August); and if you would like to attend both classes (July and August), the cost is £18.
You can download and print the essays with the following links, or read them on Scribd. For the July programme, please use this link. You can also locate the readings by using the drop-down menu on the above tabs.
Please feel free to contact me for any further information.
Thank you for your interest.
