The Carnival
On the other hand, I think that the concept and its etymological history has received too much unwarranted bad press. So disreputable, most responses to the notion of beauty are knee-jerk dismissals largely based on a definition that has been narrowed to the width of a reptile's eye. Advocate of the underdog, I would like to fight on behalf of this faded sovereign. I was feeling like Verity looks, sword in hand, lifted toward the North axis in full-fledged attack-mode, yet at the same time truly exposed and vulnerable - skinless (if you accept it Hirst's way). I guess it's the perfect analogy for discussing my work and ideas that seem too delicate to be exposed to the rough and tumble of the public domain. Shifting over to a discussion about Verity the new creation by Damien Hirst, it seems that the project is suggesting that it's not enough to be EXPOSED and PREGNANT, it is now necessary or the necessity is placed upon us, to be SKINNED. We could think about this in terms of radical and viral surveillance, in other words, in most current matters privacy has ceased to exist, even (especially) at the cellular level. There is so much about Hirst that I loathe, yet I can't loathe this sculpture because of its power to describe a relevant aspect of contemporary living. The system and its ability to extract information and knowledge about each of us individually, is at critical mass.
